Why We Take Some Cases and Not Others

Why We Take Some Cases and Not Others

If you’ve called a law firm and heard “I’m sorry, we can’t help with that,” it can feel like a door closing at the worst possible moment. Here is what usually lies behind that answer, and why it often works in your favor.

Why we may decline a case

  • Focus—-We practice only family law, so we know the Texas Family Code and local courts well. A case outside that area deserves a lawyer who does it every day.
  • Conflicts of interest—If we’ve represented your spouse or someone connected to your case, Texas ethics rules bar us from representing you.
  • Capacity—We would rather decline than take on more than we can handle well.
  • Timing—If a deadline is about to run out, a quick “no” lets you find help sooner.

Why we practice only in Denton and Collin Counties

Every county courthouse has its own judges, local rules, and procedures. We focus on Denton and Collin Counties so we can walk into court fully prepared. Where you file a divorce often depends on where you live, so your address matters. If your case belongs in another county, we’ll say so.

What happens if we can’t take your case

A “no” from us should not be the end of your search. When we decline, we will try to:

  • Explain why, as far as we ethically can
  • Point you to a qualified attorney, legal aid organization, or the State Bar of Texas Lawyer Referral Service
